Elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water

During this Winter season, the Southern Highland Craft Guild will be showcasing life’s classic four elements in their newest focus gallery. Beginning February 6, Elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water will be on display at the organization’s headquarters on the Blue Ridge Parkway through May 3.

The exhibit features six artists of the Guild with works in clay, fiber, glass and jewelry. Curator Nikki Josheff describes the importance of these four elements as necessary tools in a craftsman’s process. “Whether it be the flame for a firing, or water for wet felting, each of these artists are masters of manipulating such properties into a fine piece of craft,” stated Josheff. With most artists using elemental techniques, “it was also the natural simplicity of the individual’s work that captured the theme of Elements.”

New member Tina Curry from Knoxville, Tennessee will be exhibiting for the first time at the Folk Art Center. Known for her organic composition with raku firing, Curry’s piece “Nomads” plays with all four of the themes. “My [raku firing] process takes the clay body from the earth and through fire, air, water to unveil its beauty,” she says. Within the first five months of being accepted into the Guild, Curry already feels that her “creativity is boosted from immersing herself in the network of talented artists.”

The Guild currently boasts nearly 900 artists within its 293 counties (from Maryland to Alabama) of the Southern Highlands. An educational non-profit organization founded in 1930, the Guild’s mission is “to bring together the crafts and craftspeople of the Southern Highlands for the benefit of shared resources, education, marketing and conservation.” It is headquartered in the Folk Art Center located at Milepost 382 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Open daily from 9am – 5pm. For more information visit craftguild.org or call 828-298-7928.
