I grew up sleeping under quilts made by my grandmother and filled with cotton grown by my grandfather. That comfort stays with me always.
I learned to quilt using time-honored traditions from women of the Southern Appalachians. Today, my bed quilts and fiber art are influenced by the strong geometric patterns of traditional quilts, but I bend the rules to give a more contemporary expression. I see quilt patterns in everything...nature, architecture, and even in my dreams! Personal experiences and my Appalachian environment provide inspiration for most of my work.
I have been teaching quilting since 1991. My favorite students are beginners. If they can acquire a good foundation of techniques, they can go anywhere with their personal creativity and artistry.
I grew up in Macon, Georgia and earned a master's degree from the University of Georgia in Rehabilitation Counseling, and worked in that field for over eleven years
LINT (Ladies in New Textiles), of which I am a member, is exhibiting at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts for the month of May. The theme is "Transparencies". Please come to our opening reception May 2 from 7 to 9 pm.
My quilt group "PTA", (no we are not a parents school group!) is exhibiting at the North Carolina Arboretum. Some of our quilts are from our "pipe" and "glass" challenges that we submitted to the American Quilters Society. Check us out!! The exhibit is upstairs in the hall to the left.
