Scottish Elegance by Thistle Studio
“…Stay a moment little girl…let me wrap my plaiddie ‘round you; it is cold.”
--Mortons of Bardon (1863)
As a little girl growing up in Glasgow, Scotland, I took for granted my Scottish culture and tradition. Years later, having immigrated to the USA, I have rediscovered my heritage through weaving tartan cloth. It reminds me of my roots – Clans Maclahlan, Russell, Gillies, and Blair Logie District Tartan.
It is said that you can't go home again, but I find that through the ancient art of tartan weaving I can recall the traditions of my past – wearing my first tartan skirt, Scottish country dancing in the church hall with my Aunt Nancy, Hogmany (New Years) rituals. Burns night dinners and studying great Scottish leaders such as Bruce, Wallace, Scott and Livingstone.
The themes and variations of the past live again in the present mixing of colour and design, and they are passed on to you and to the future through my weavings and your imagination. The colours I work with truly recall the blue of the lochs and burns, the purple of the heather, the yellow of the gorse, the browns and blacks of the peat bogs, and the red of lichens and hips and haw berries.
Whether you are a lassie or a laddie, I hope that you will wrap yourself in my “plaiddies,” that you will let them warm you, and that you will “stay a moment” with your Scottish roots. |
