I create two dimensional fiber art using cotton fabrics that have been stitched, collaged, fused, free-motion quilted and beaded. These pieces span the continuum from abstract to stylized renderings of landscapes and portraits. Much of my current work focuses on the mountains and forests of the upstate Carolinas. The texture and color of fabric attract me. I was introduced to sewing as a very small child by special dresses made for me by my mother and my grandmother – and a quilt made from the scraps of all those special dresses.
I am strongly committed to serving the Master Creator and observing His handiwork in the world. My first career was in engineering, so I love to solve intricate puzzles and toy with possibilities. Fiber art is my way to weave all this together – reverence, beauty, problem-solving, and creativity. My art helps me say things for which I have no words. There is a deep, quiet resonance of “Yes, that's it.” I hope others hear it too.
Many of my landscapes begin with a mad rush to capture a moment in a photograph. That compelling image/feeling of place often suggests choices of abstracting lines or stylizing a more representational depiction. From sketches, I begin to collect a fabric palette and choose construction techniques. My design evolves as the piece reveals itself on my design wall.
