Media: ClayDiana Gillispie's company, Asheville Tileworks, has produced handmade tile in the Arts and Crafts tradition for thirteen years. Diana creates handmade tile including original designs, reproduction tile from the Arts & Crafts movement; custom work including fireplace surrounds, kitchen backsplashes, accent tiles, and bathrooms. Asheville Tileworks also makes custom commemorative tiles for awards, promotions, fundraisers, groundbreaking ceremonies, memorials, and donor walls. In addition, tile trivits are available for gifts and come complete in a gift box.
Asheville Tileworks, founded in 1996 out of the River Arts District, is now located in Asheville’s Kenilworth neighborhood. Diana's husband and architect, Michael Robinson, collaborates on the relief designs, configures custom tile layouts on the computer, documents tile installations, and offers ongoing encouragement. Their son, Ellis, hand-presses tiles when he’s not away at college. Many talented clay artists from Western North Carolina’s extensive crafts community have worked as assistants over the years, pressing and glazing tiles and firing the kilns. Diana's goal at Asheville Tileworks is to enhance the homes of her clients with color, pattern and design. Diana's approach to design is to understand and compliment the individual aesthetic of her clients through years of experience with custom tile. Ideally, her work is about sharing ideas, forming relationships and always being open to finding a better solution.
