Jim Whalen / Paradox PotteryI've lived most of my life in North Carolina, from the eastern part of the state, to the piedmont to the...
I started realistic bird carvings in 1978. As shown in my gallery, I also do relief carvings of birds and landscapes. My relief carvings are attached to a box, vase , or desk accessory. Information on the pictures of relief carvings in my gallery explain ways my work can be used around the house other than just for decoration.
Using jelutong and tupelo wood, I carve with dental grinders, wood burners and acrylic paints. I have worked with many of the top wildfowl carvers in the world over the years and I have won awards at the World Carving Competition and the Southeastern Wildlife Festival. I have carved and sold over 700 original carvings . Although pictures are good for presenting my work, I believe my carvings are more appreciated when seen in person. Visitors are welcome to view my gallery at my home in galax, va which is just 10 minutes off interstate 77 on the va.-n.c. border and also the guild fairs in july and october.
