Cinnabar Heart Pendants: What exactly IS Chinese Cinnabar, anyway?? Chinese cinnabar consists of many layers (at least 40) of what the Chinese call lacquer, built up, then carved or pressed into designs. We’ve all seen boxes, lamps, vases, and bangle bracelets made up of Cinnabar. Since the 40’s, the Chinese are NO LONGER using mercury to even out the color of the lacquer. If you have an old piece that is rust or a brown-orange in color, please make sure to seal it and put it away for safe-keeping. Today’s Cinnabar is a beautiful shade of red, lightweight, and a great alternative to rubies, enamels or blood coral.
