Early Bird I

Jeweler

Sammy Fong was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he earned a BA in Engineering. After a series of interesting jobs, including a five-year apprenticeship in blacksmithing at the Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, New York, he entered the Jewelry Production Crafts Program at Haywood Community College in Clyde, North Carolina, graduating with an Associate in Applied Science Degree in 1997.

Sammy's designs are inspired by calligraphic and organic natural lines, shapes and forms, contrasting elements, and also by the technique of hand forging, which suggests new designs at the same time it imposes limitations on the design. He has always loved working with his hands, and believes that the most rewarding and fulfilling aspect of his work is the exploration of new design ideas and the discovery of unexpected new possibilities which accompany the truly remarkable human ability to translate a mental image into a finished three-dimensional object.
