JASON JANOW

2022 FEATURED ARTIST

BOOTH # TBA

Where are you from / where do you live now / what brought you to the southern highland region?

I grew up in the southern highland region, in Amherst Virginia. I moved to Asheville and learned of the Guild once I had been here a while.

What is your favorite part about living in the southern highlands?

Being emmersed and surrounded by the mountainous ecosystem makes me feel part of nature.

Tell us something unique about your process / what makes your work unique among artists in your same discipline?

Something unique to my jewerly and process is creating my own material. By casting branches and bark into silver, gold, and bronze, I’m creating my own material to work with

How long have you been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild? What is your favorite part of being a Guild member?

I became a SHCG member in 2007. Initially, my career path demanded that I be business minded and income driven in order to make a living as a crafts artist. Becoming a member instantly boosted my income, and provided opportunities that simply would not have happened otherwise. Today, my favorite part of being a member is the satisfaction of helping our Guild through volunteering, and sharing the Guild’s story with others.

What can visitors expect to find at your booth? Are you working on anything specific to reveal at the Craft Fair this Summer? (New work?)

As a professional craft artist, there is an expectation that I create new work. My customers expect it, and I strive for it every show. For this show, I have a new line of Bark Bracelets, a few new ring designs, and I’m planning to have more fine jewelry in gold.

Anything else you’d like to share?

It is an honor to be in a show that has been going for 75 years. I feel great opportunity by simply being at the show and displaying my work for people to see. Those that came before me did great things for the guild that we have today. I feel that I owe them. I am compelled to create my best work.
