With a resume that includes car mechanic, landscaper, itinerant apple picker, railroad brakeman, carpenter and back-to-the-lander, it makes sense that Caryl builds furniture.
Artists and woodworkers are tinkerers, problem-solvers and sometimes risk-takers. So life is never dull for an aspiring "Ms. Fix-It."
Her time as a student learning furniture making in the Professional Crafts Department at Haywood Community College, was life-changing. After a few years of working in her own studio and writing for a Japanese woodworking magazine, she gravitated back to the Haywood Crafts Department where she is employed as studio assistant and teacher.
Caryl's work ranges from furniture to turned bowls; from lamps, mirrors and handmade paper to constructed objects that tell a story. She leans toward production techniques but loves to create one-of-a-kind pieces.
There are no hard boundaries between Caryl's home life and her professional life. Along with her partner Journel she was instrumental in the design and building their home and studio and furnishings. Whether working with students, doing her own studio work or collaborating with Journel on art and home projects, all parts of her life connect.
