I have been teaching first grade at Haw
Creek since 2002.
I received my teaching licensure for K- 6th grade from UNC of Asheville. In December 2010, I earned National Board for Professional Teachers Certification. My first degree was a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from Mississippi State University. I also have an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Jewelry Production Crafts from Haywood Community College.
One of my most important life experiences as a young woman was serving as a Peace Corp Volunteer in Ecuador, South America. I learned to appreciate and value diversity as well as being enriched by the people and cultures that I interacted with. Living in a foreign culture also taught me to appreciate my own culture in new ways and I gained a greater understanding of what it means to have the liberties and privileges I enjoy as a citizen of the USA.
As a young adult, being a mother was the most important role of my life. As my son has grown and become independent, I have enjoyed taking on the roles of teacher and mentor. I love being a teacher because it is such significant work. I can't think of any task more important than helping young people succeed in school. I believe that a successful school experience positively affects a child's sense of worth and provides an important foundation for future endeavors. As a teacher I strive to provide meaningful learning opportunities, encouragement, and positive experiences. I love being a lifelong learner and hope to pass on some of that joy to my students.
