As a fabric artist, I work with both natural images and abstract symbols. In my naturalistic pieces, I study plants and landscapes and interpret them in fiber through painting, collage, and stitching. Other themes I've explored include games, politics, humorous aspects of life, anxieties and the "modern saint series."

Before fabrics took over my artistic life, my studio background had been in jewelry and metalwork. College and graduate degrees focused on metalwork, but I was always flirting with textiles, drawing wire down to thread size and knitting or sewing with it, impressing metal sheet with fabric textures, and constructing silver purses. I worked for several years as a bench jeweler, specializing in custom work and restoring antiques.

For more than a decade, I took time off to concentrate on my family and experimented with a variety of media, eventually focusing on fabric. "Fabric collage" is the term I use to describe my painted, cut and collaged pieces. I take the simple enterprise of sewing and experiment with color, image, technique, and materials. It is both play and work, excitement and drudgery, introspection and expression, reward and frustration. I love to do what I do!

My work has been exhibited at the Appalachian Regional Commission in Washington, D.C., and in galleries and art centers in Maine, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia. I am a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, Fiberlectic and other arts organizations.

Teaching is another love of mine, and I offer workshops in fabric and fiber arts, collage, and other media. I consider teaching a great opportunity for exchange of ideas and images, and I enjoy helping others discover their own artistic gifts. Topics range from, but are not limited to, painting on fabric, collage, hand and machine stitching, personal narrative in textiles, found-object art. I welcome custom orders of all sizes and complexity. I enjoy working with people to help them discover and define their aesthetic hearts’ desire. If you would like to order individual pieces, please contact me by email with "Fabric Collage" in the subject line.
