I am an encaustic artist and bookbinder, smitten with beeswax and bindings. For years encaustic and bookbinding were separate entities in my life, the art and the craft, the experimental and the meditative, and I craved a convergence. My journals are designed to honor books as an art form.
Erin lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, and works daily at her cozy home studio near Pisgah National Forest. She pushes her personal boundaries with complex, challenging bindings. In her sculptural books, historical Coptic binding is paired with Longstitch Weave stitch and individual books are bound together in Dos-a-Dos or Gatefold structures. Her butterfly books feature fallen wings found on trails, preserved with encaustic beeswax, and finished with a specially designed Butterfly stitch.
Erin spends her leisure time hiking, canoeing, camping, creek stomping, star gazing, and porch sitting. Her adventures in the mountains, lakes, and rivers become embedded personally into her imagery. She teaches classes at 310 ART, Penland School of Crafts, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, John C Campbell Folk School, The Bascom Center for Visual Arts, Lesley Riley's Red Thread, Kathryn Bevier's ArtWorks, Patricia Baldwin Seggebruch's EncaustiCamp / OPENstudio, and private instruction at her very own Erin Keane Studio.
