I love the way clay takes on qualities of other materials. Its ability to mimic fabric pulled me in right away. I construct my work as if from a dressmaker's pattern. In fact, there is a wall of such patterns in my studio. After assembling each simple shape, I add clay “ruffles” and embellishments. Texture and color make each piece look old and I hope like something you have never seen before. No two are alike, and some have stories to tell. I hope they make you smile.
After receiving an MFA from George Washington University, with a year as teaching fellow there, I began showing work, first in hometown Washington DC and later in galleries in the US, Taiwan and Canada. The Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC, The Fuller Museum of Craft, Brockton, MA and The Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington, NC all have my work in their permanent collections. Relocating to Asheville in 2015, I now am happily at work in my studio, which, for the first time, has a view!
