I am compelled by the sensation of seeing things fresh, as if for the first time. Everyday, the flora & fauna surrounding my studio amazes me. These daily discoveries are my epiphanies for my work & my desire is to create something that not only conveys the wonder I see around me but that also brings its observer to this same place of discovery.

Son of an inventor motorcycle racer & warrior princess homemaker, Michael Sherrill has lived in the western North Carolina mountains since 1974. Self taught & curious, he considers himself a materials-based artist, experimenting primarily in the media of clay, metal, & glass. His interest is the intersection of where humans & materials meet in handmade objects & the natural world. Since his humble beginnings as a young father throwing cups & teapots to sell at craft fairs, Michael’s work is now represented around the globe; from prestigious museum collections such as the Smithsonian Renwick collection, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art & the Mint Museum to outdoor installations in the cities of Inchon, Korea and Charlotte, NC. Michael. Michael has been active in the art community at large, participating in national & international residencies, panels & workshops. In 1993, the Year of Craft, Michael was selected for the White House collection, which traveled to venues around the United States. His piece, “Incandescent Bottles,” now resides in the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum. In 2010 Michael was awarded the prestigious United States Artists Wingate Fellowship.
