Description

The Corn Shuck Doll is a link to the past.  Corn was a vital food for the native Americans and the dried shucks were sometimes used to make dolls for children to play with.

The use of natural materials was passed on to the European settlers of the Appalachian region, and the shucks were also used to make braided hats, rugs and mops.  When twisted, the shucks also provided a sturdy bottom for chairs.  Corn shucks have even been found in old mattress ticking!  Today, the art and craft of the corn shuck doll is a link back to the days of the resourcefulness of the Appalachian spirit.  Enjoy this piece of history by creating your own heirloom doll!

Anne Freels

I fell in love with corn shuck dolls in 1975, when I learned how to make one in an Appalachian Studies class during my senior year of High School in Oak Ridge, TN. I have been making the dolls ever since that day. I am a full-time craft artist, and have been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 1989.
