“My art generally abstract and informed by music, poetry, emotion and color. Color is probably my forte and has led to my exploration in dyeing my own fabric. I’ve been hand-dyeing fabric since 1994 using fiber reactive dye. I employ three distinct methods:
- The first is the scientific method that produces repeatable results by carefully measuring all the ingredients in relation to the weight of the fabric.
- The second is the surprise method where you willy-nilly throw dye, fabric, water and fixative together and you get what you get. (Sometimes I literally throw the dye à la Jackson Pollack.) While this may sound chaotic, the results are really quite nice. It’s also a way to use the dye that’s old and no longer reliable. Case in point, a yellow dye with a leaky lid produced a lovely shade of salmon.
- The third is painting the fabric with dye. A sub-set is painting with the fabric paint. While this is not actually dyeing, the result can be similar.” ~ Lynne G. Harrill
