Shaker Cherry Quilted Oval Tray

This quilt top tray marry two traditional American crafts.  Inspired by Jeff’s wife, who is a quilter, he began crafting traditional quilt blocks on the tops of many of his shaker boxes and trays using various wood veneers.

Using the methods of old Shaker craftsmen, artist Jeffrey Neil uses thin wood strips that are made with a cut finger pattern. Hot water soaking makes this wood pliable, and the wood is bent to an oval shape in a single motion. Copper tacks in the fingers fix the oval shape. The top and bottom are secured with wooden pegs.  They are finished with four coats of polyurethane.
