Description

The Spirit Bird is sculptural art with engaging inspirational function; Wings of imagination; let your Spirit soar!  The warmth of the undulating wood wings combines with Phillip’s beautiful glass marble that Mike carefully captured with tolerances that allow the marble to rotate and spin.  The Spirit Bird’s function is to tickle curiosity and inspire the imagination which naturally kindles the illimitable and inimitable potential (spirit) within each of us.

“Without this playing with fantasy no creative work has ever yet come to birth.  The dept we owe to the play of the imagination in incalculable.”  -Carl Jung

Creative Woodturning, an amazing medium and enjoyable art. Trees are magnificent, often living beyond several human lifetimes. When a tree dies its inherent natural beauty can be an ongoing voice. My methods sculpting Cascading Diamonds, Kissing Fish, Manta Rays, Spirit Birds, Trillium Boxes, Capturing Spheres and other original forms on the lathe combine playful exploration with patient, focused tool application, striving to reveal the inherent beauty of fallen trees in elegant, engaging and inspirational ways. My studio is an exhilarating zen zone inspired by personal studies, ancient and contemporary, in the brilliant cosmos, the positive potential of humanity and the beauty of nature.

Phillip Nolley

My current body of work embraces a spirit of improvisational free play through the use of new glass color applications and carving techniques. These techniques produce active surface patterns that help generate a dynamic relationship between design and form. The random exposure of previously hidden color patterns created by the carving process also adds a layer of visual and tactile richness. My intention with this marriage of freeform design and random surface treatment is to reference artifactual objects through a contemporary style, creating connections that reach deep into our visual experiences for timeless human themes.
