Creating stone vessels on a lathe or hand carving is started by picking a rough boulder or slab of alabaster. Next, the boulders are made symmetrical with angle grinders using diamond burrs and blades, or a core drill. Stone is then attached to the lathe plate to be trued using carbine bits. The desired shape is formed and hollowed out to the desired thickness. Carbide sanding discs and paper is used starting with 36 grit and finished with 2000 grit.

Description
Richard’s main focus has been sculpting, painting, and drawing prior to getting interested in vessels. His first were in wood which were hand carved, then after being introduced to stone, he hand carved some vessels in stone. A friend introduced him to turning alabaster on a wood lathe and he worked at turning vessels during the years 2018 & 2019. 2020 has been occupied by expanding his shop and adding a second lathe which will be used for wood turning. Richard is challenged to create universal concepts in various forms, vessels now being one of them.
He selects wood or stone by its feel, touch and color to carve. He generally begins carving with no preconceptions about what the form will be. He finds this approach allows tremendous freedom to create unique forms. Sometime he will create a form to make a statement about what has happened or is happening in the world with the hope that it will move people to explore their thoughts and feelings. His art is about the wonder and beauty of our shared humanity.
