Jeff Neil is a woodworker who lives and creates fine boxes in eastern Tennessee.
“While working full-time as a research engineer, I experimented with various mediums until I found that woodworking brought me the most pleasure and also allowed me to use those skills I had developed as an engineer coupled with my interest in fine crafts.”
Jeff has the pleasure of being married to a quilter, who inspires a lot of his work; he uses a marquetry, or inlay technique to add quilt squares to the tops of traditional Shaker boxes, making each one even more unique and special!
This box is made from walnut and curly maple, with various other woods in the Barbara Fritchie Star quilt square. The box is made using the old Shaker methods: hot water soaking for bending the wood; copper tacks in the “fingers” keep the oval shape; and wooden pegs secure the bottom and the lid. Shaker Boxes come in particular sizes, and this one is a Size 4: 8 1/2 in. wide, 6 in. deep, and just over 3 1/4 in. high.
