Batik is my medium; a realistic translation of what I see, is what I make. Hot wax flows freely until congealing in the porous fabric on which I begin my image. Next a wave of cool, liquid color washes over the fabric, and the now-cold wax protects it's cloth from all colors. Warm air wafts, drying the fabric, readying it for more wax to flow and bind to the fabric under it. Each color has it's day until the image unfolds. The wax is released in the end; remelted into the fabric and now, all is One!

Beginnings of my artistic career go back as far as memory can go. My mother was an artist, as is my sister. We all dabbled in many arts and crafts; but my first brush with batik was in high school art class. I let batik rest and pursued other interesting endeavors for a while, coming back to batik in 1978; first as wall art, then as clothing. I became a full time artist in 1989, supporting myself making original batik images on clothing. Since joining the Southern Highlands Guild in 2013, I am only working with batik as paintings, rather than clothing. My years making the art clothing gave me so much experience in batik that I now use it as this expressive fine art form.
